Since 421 AD, Venice has stood on a submerged forest of millions of wooden piles -mainly alder and oak – driven deep into the lagoon’s clay bed.

Over time, the salty waters petrified the wood, making it as solid as stone. Iconic landmarks like St. Mark’s Bell Tower and the Basilica della Salute rest on hundreds of thousands of these trunks. This incredible feat of medieval engineering, stretching meters below the surface, still supports the city after 1,500 years.
